Who We Are

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, war-time veterans' organization. It is a community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members--men and women--in nearly 15,000 American Legion Posts worldwide. These Posts are organized into 55 Departments--one each for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the Philippines.

Post 41 was founded in 1919 by a group of twenty-nine World War I veterans who were residents of Berryville and Clarke County. It was named in honor of Captain Lloyd W. Williams, USMC. Captain Williams was the first local soldier killed during World War I. He was a hero of the Battle of Belleau Wood and a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross.

Post 41 currently has about 150 members including veterans from World War II to the current Global War on Terror and every conflict/war in between. The Post has an active Auxiliary Unit and we work together to support veterans, veterans' families, and our community.

Post 41 does not operate a club or conduct fund-raising activities. Its programs and services are supported by the Post's commercial rental income.

All eligible veterans are welcome.
